Design and Looks
The LG KF510 is a very good-looking phone with compact dimensions. The exteriors make generous use of metal panels and glossy plastic surfaces. The phone sports very chic colour tones that feature gradual transition from one colour to another. Being a slider, the front features little except for the screen and the touch sensitive pad. The back of the phone is plain and the camera is hidden under the bottom of the top-half of the slider which affords it some sort of protection.
The screen is a smallish 2.2-inch unit that produces 262K colours over QVGA resolution. It sports great brightness and contrast levels and decent sunlight legibility. The keys below the slider are strangely text-friendly. The keys are large and feature press feedback. Each key is elevated at the centre to improve tactility. This just goes to show that sliders too can feature good keypads if designed properly. The touchpad is simply amazing. It features haptic feedback and makes scrolling large lists easier.
The phone's telephony is great and offers good reception and in-call voice quality. The loudspeaker performs admirably and can be easily heard even in noisy environments. The phone's user-interface is good and is always responsive.
The camera on the phone is provided by a 3MP unit with LED flash and autofocus. The camera interface is very friendly and offers options like white balance, colour effects, quality levels and shake reduction. The picture quality of the phone is simply fabulous and the images it produces are sharp and the colour reproduction, accurate. Noise levels are kept low without sacrificing much detail. The camera performs the best for a 3MP unit. However, we cannot say the same about video quality which is very poor.
So far there isn't much to complain about in the phone. But an obvious let down is the lack of 3G connectivity. Otherwise, the KF510 has pretty much every other connectivity option covered. The phone also has the usual time management and organizing features. One of the applications that seems out of place but is welcome nonetheless is the office document viewer developed by Access. It reads all common office document types including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Overall, using the phone is a fun experience. It has a nice camera and good multimedia functions. Interacting with the UI is easy thanks to the touch-pad. The LG KF510 is a good example of a phone that merges style with substance.
