Design and Looks
The LG Bullet KP106b is a simple phone with a candybar design. On the front it features a small 1.5 inch 65K colour display below which is the metallic navigation key and the rubberized alphanumeric keypad. The phone is bare at the sides save for a universal proprietary port through which users may connect the charger and the headset. The port is covered by a rubber cap to protect it against the build-up of dust. The display is surrounded by glossy plastic and the rest of the phone is made from cheap but reasonably robust plastic.
The display of the phone sports a low resolution of 128 x 128 and looks very grainy to say the least. The navigation key gives quick access to the radio feature, contacts and messages in the standby screen. The keypad is a mixed bag; while the keys are large they are hard to press down because they are rigid. This translates into great touch-orientation but reduced tactility. However, this goes well with another shortcoming of the phone; the slow text editor that takes time to process your input.
The phone's two most outstanding features are the FM Radio and Anti-Theft Mobile Tracker. The radio is simple but allows for automatic scanning and saving of channels as presets. The radio can also be played through the earpiece that doubles up as a loudspeaker. This earpiece is surprisingly good but does not match the output quality and sound intensity of dedicated loudspeakers.
The other feature, Anti-Theft Mobile Tracker, although functional is not of much practical use because most thieves would not go through the trouble of stealing something of little monetary value such as this phone. But if it does get stolen, the user will be informed of the new SIM number that's inserted in place of the old one and the triangulated location at which the switch was made. This information is made available through an SMS to two of the alternate numbers which the user specified when setting up the anti-theft feature. The owner of the phone may use this information while filing a police complaint regarding the theft.
The phone is also loaded with basic Java applications such as calculator, unit convertor, world clock, alarm, stop watch, scheduler, reminder and Sudoku game. The KP106b also offers support for English and Hindi languages for both, the SMS feature and the phone menu.
Now, for the faults: there is no java multitasking. So, when users use the radio feature, they cannot set the radio to play in the background while they browse through the phone or send and receive text messages. Like the SMS editor, the user interface is sometimes sluggish and irresponsive. The interface may at times hang or the phone may switch off unintentionally. Call quality is decent but not up to the mark of some other basic phones in the market today. Also, there is also no message counter or call duration meter.
If you weigh the pros against the cons, you may be compelled to look for another phone because there are many better alternatives to the KP106b available in the market today.
